While most art museums founded at the turn of the century focused on collections of well-known masters, Andrew Carnegie envisioned a museum collection consisting of the “Old Masters of tomorrow.” In 1896, he initiated a series of exhibitions of contemporary art and proposed that the museum’s paintings collection be formed through purchases from this series. The museum’s name was changed once again in 1986 to its current name-Carnegie Museum of Art-to more clearly show its relationship as one of the four Carnegie Museums (which includes Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center, The Andy Warhol Museum. Just two years later, the Bruce Galleries and the Heinz Galleries were opened to house the museum’s decorative arts collection and major changing exhibitions, respectively.

The size of the gallery space was tripled in 1974 with the opening of the Scaife Galleries, the second major expansion of the Institute’s original building. The museum’s name remained the same until 1963, when it was officially changed to Museum of Art, Carnegie Institute to help distinguish it from the nearby College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). The first major expansion to the building on Forbes Avenue in 1907 provided space for Carnegie’s growing collection of dinosaur fossils, as well as the Hall of Sculpture and the Hall of Architecture. Originally known as the Department of Fine Arts, Carnegie Institute, the museum’s first art gallery was dedicated for public use on November 5, 1895, and was initially housed in what is now the Main Branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Today the Carrick branch is much more than a repository for books and a quiet place for study.

To provide natural light – as well as create a quiet, healthy, and ultra-efficient building – the design team suggested that Carrick become first Passive House library in North America, and embraced the idea of "flow" to guide the project.įLOW is a central idea to the new library: the flow of information is the library’s mission, the flow of people through the space is handled by the ramp design connecting all levels of the library, the flow of storm water at the site is managed by a large rain garden and bio-swale surrounding the building, light flows into the building through large triple-pane windows, and the flow of filtered fresh air is central to the heat recovery ventilation system. The new library, designed in collaboration with NK Architects, is built on the existing and new site, and increases the Carrick branch to just under 8,000sf. The CLP bought the site next door to expand the building, and to put the library front and center in the civic space of the community.
